Why is Immunization
important?
- Because it will protect your child against diseases
that can hurt, cripple or kill!
- Here is some important information:
What Parents Should Know
Before vaccines, parents in the United States could
expect that every year:
- Polio would paralyze 10,000
children.
- Rubella (German measles) would
cause birth defects and mental retardation in as many as 20,000 newborns.
- Measles would infect about 4
million children, killing 3,000.
- Diphtheria would be one of the
most common causes of death in school-aged children.
- A bacterium called
Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) would cause meningitis in 15,000
children, leaving many with permanent brain damage.
- Pertussis (whooping cough)
would kill 8,000 children, most of whom were under the age of one.
New Immunization requirements
for Child Care and Schools (2009-10)
If your child has been involved in kindergarten screenings for next school year
(2009-10), you probably know that the Kansas Legislature has passed new
immunization requirements for schools. The same is also for child care
providers, but the requirements are different for each of these groups of
children.
Although these changes are somewhat confusing, it may be easiest to understand
by listing the changes for school-age children first and then enumerating all of
the requirements for both school entry and for child care.
For the 2009-10 school year, the new immunization requirements are as follows:
-
Hepatitis B
– 3 doses required through grade 9
-
Varicella
(chickenpox) – 2 doses required for kindergarten and 1
dose required for grades 1-9 unless chickenpox disease is documented by a
licensed physician.
-
Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis)
– booster dose of Tdap required at age 11 yrs. Students who will be 12 by
Sept. 1, 2009 must have a Tdap booster if more than 2 years since their last
dose of Tetanus vaccine.
The remaining school vaccine requirements are as follows:
-
DTaP
– 5 doses required for school entry
-
Polio
– 4 doses required for school entry
-
MMR
(Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) – 2 doses required for school entry
Child care immunization requirements (including preschools) are as follows:
-
DTaP
– five doses , at ages: 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 12 months, and 4-5
years.
-
Polio
– 4 doses at ages: 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and 4-5
years.
-
MMR
– 2 doses at ages: 12 months and 4-5 years.
-
Hepatitis B
– 3 doses at ages: birth, 2 months, and 6 months.
-
Varicella (chickenpox)
– 2 doses at ages: 12 months and 4-5 years.
-
Hib
– 3 doses at ages: 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months.
-
PCV7 (pneumococcal)
– 4 doses at ages: 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and 12 months.
-
Hepatitis A
– 2 doses at ages: 12 months and 18 months.
In addition to the new requirements, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) recommends the following vaccines:
-
Meningococcal (Meningitis)
– age 11 years, required for entry to most colleges.
-
HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
– 3 doses at age 11 yrs. for females, for prevention of cervical cancer
-
Influenza
– yearly vaccination after 6 months of age
-
Rotavirus
– 2 to 3 doses before 8 months of age.
Because some of the vaccine requirements are new, not all physician
office's may carry all of the necessary vaccines. For this reason, Kingman
County Health Dept. has increased the number of vaccines that it purchases for
children with private insurance and is now stocking all vaccines for all
children, regardless of their insurance coverage.
